Residential contractors in Rhode Island register with the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board (CRLB). You can search a company or person by name or registration number on the board's website.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts registers Home Improvement Contractors (HIC) for work on existing owner-occupied homes. The state's public lookup lets you check a registration and see whether it's current.
Also ask for
A certificate of liability insurance and proof of workers' compensation coverage, a written quote, and a clear description of base work and surface thickness.
