Driveway paving cost: the three ways to fix a driveway

Driveway paving isn't one job — it's three different scopes of work. Sealcoating protects asphalt that's still sound, resurfacing adds a new layer over a solid base, and full replacement rebuilds the driveway from the base up. This guide shows example prices for each, based on our current price book.

Three services, not three quality tiers

Sealcoating is maintenance: crack fill plus two protective coats over asphalt that's still in good shape. It extends the life of a healthy driveway but can't fix structural problems.

Resurfacing (an overlay) puts a new layer of asphalt over the existing driveway. It works only when the base underneath is structurally sound — the contractor confirms that on site.

Full replacement removes the old driveway, rebuilds or repairs the base, and paves new asphalt. It's the right call when there are base failures, drainage problems, or widespread cracking.

What moves the price

Size is the biggest driver, but layout matters too: curves, turnarounds and extra edges add labor and material. Base condition, drainage, and how much preparation the old surface needs all change the final number.

That's why an estimate measured from your own driveway beats any statewide average. Enter your address above and we outline your driveway on aerial imagery, calculate its square footage, and price the service you choose from the same itemized price book behind the tables on this page.

Pricing factors

What affects driveway cost?

Driveway size

Most line items are priced per square foot of driveway, so size is the biggest driver. We measure yours from aerial imagery.

Layout

Curves, loops and multiple sections take more hand work at the edges than a straight run.

Base work

A regraded base costs less than excavating and installing a new, deeper gravel base — but a good base is what keeps a driveway from cracking.

Surface material

Asphalt, concrete and pavers differ a lot in price. Thickness and the number of asphalt layers matter too.

Removal and disposal

Breaking up and hauling away the old driveway. Thicker or multiple old layers add cost.

Sealing scope

For sealing, the number of coats, crack filling and oil-spot priming set the price.

Site conditions

Drainage problems, soft soil, ledge or tight access can change the scope. The contractor confirms these on site.

FAQs

Common questions.

How do I know which service my driveway needs?

As a rule of thumb: surface fading and hairline cracks point to sealcoating, surface wear with a solid base points to resurfacing, and deep cracks, sinking or drainage problems point to replacement. The contractor confirms the right scope during the free on-site measurement.
