What a full asphalt replacement includes

A proper replacement starts with removing the old driveway and excavating to a stable base. The crew then grades and compacts the gravel base — this is what carries the load and keeps water moving away — and paves hot-mix asphalt over it, compacted to a smooth finish.

Edges are tied in at the garage, street and walkways, and transitions are milled or feathered so nothing trips you or catches a plow. The example prices below include this full scope for typical straight driveways.

Why two identical-sized driveways can price differently

Base condition is the wildcard. A driveway built on ledge or with poor drainage needs more excavation and base material. Long edges, curves and aprons add linear work. Access matters too — a tight lot takes more hand work than an open one.

Your instant estimate measures your driveway's actual size and edge length from aerial imagery, so it starts from your property rather than an average.

Pricing factors

What affects driveway cost?

Driveway size

Most line items are priced per square foot of driveway, so size is the biggest driver. We measure yours from aerial imagery.

Layout

Curves, loops and multiple sections take more hand work at the edges than a straight run.

Base work

A regraded base costs less than excavating and installing a new, deeper gravel base — but a good base is what keeps a driveway from cracking.

Surface material

Asphalt, concrete and pavers differ a lot in price. Thickness and the number of asphalt layers matter too.

Removal and disposal

Breaking up and hauling away the old driveway. Thicker or multiple old layers add cost.

Sealing scope

For sealing, the number of coats, crack filling and oil-spot priming set the price.

Site conditions

Drainage problems, soft soil, ledge or tight access can change the scope. The contractor confirms these on site.

FAQs

Common questions.

How long does a new asphalt driveway last?

With a sound base, proper drainage and periodic sealcoating, an asphalt driveway typically serves for many years. The base and drainage work matter more to longevity than the surface layer itself.

Can I pave over my existing asphalt instead?

Sometimes — that's resurfacing, and it costs less than replacement. It only works when the existing base is structurally sound. The contractor checks that on site before recommending it.

When can I drive on new asphalt?

Your contractor will give you exact timing for your job and the weather at installation. Follow their guidance — driving or parking too soon can mark a fresh surface.
